Kiki Shepard, 'Showtime At The Apollo' Co-Host, Dead At 74

Kiki Shepard, the longtime co-host of Showtime at the Apollo, has died at 74.

Her representative, LaShirl Smith, confirmed to TMZ that Shepard died Monday (March 16) in Los Angeles after suffering a massive heart attack.

Shepard was best known for her years on Showtime at the Apollo, where she became a familiar face to generations of viewers during the show’s long run at Harlem’s Apollo Theater. She appeared on the program from 1987 to 2002, working alongside hosts including Steve Harvey and Mark Curry.

For a lot of Black households, Shepard was part of what made Apollo feel like an event. Week after week, she helped welcome new talent to one of the most important stages in Black entertainment, bringing warmth and a steady presence to a show that helped launch and spotlight countless performers.

Her work stretched beyond Apollo. Shepard also appeared on television shows, including A Different World, Baywatch, NYPD Blue, Everybody Hates Chris, Grey’s Anatomy, and Mind Your Business.

Before television made her a household name, Shepard began her career as a professional dancer. She performed internationally in the early 1970s, including with the D.C. Repertory Dance Company, before building a career that also included stage work.

News of her passing has prompted an outpouring of remembrance online from viewers who knew her as one of the defining faces of Showtime at the Apollo and as part of a broader era of Black television that felt rooted in community, talent, and opportunity.
