Jones, who said he is a survivor of sexual violence and domestic abuse, said his experience does not absolve him of accountability. He said he intended to recognize Brown and Usher’s musical careers while using the event to reach voters, but acknowledged that the message was not communicated and the impact extended beyond his original intent.

The apology came after Jones and U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett faced backlash over their Saturday (September 12) appearance on stage during Brown and singer Usher’s AT&T Stadium show.

Jones presented Brown with a State of Texas legislative recognition, while Crockett presented Brown and Usher with a Congressional Record entry titled “Recognizing the Artistry of Chris Brown and Usher Raymond.”

The ceremonial recognition highlighted the singers’ careers and influence on contemporary R&B and popular music and did not represent a congressional vote or legislation, according to Billboard.

Crockett faced much of the public criticism over the recognition, which came amid scrutiny of Brown’s history of assault convictions and other allegations of violence. In May 2025, he was arrested in the U.K. in connection with a 2023 London nightclub altercation involving music producer Abraham Diaw. Brown pleaded guilty in July to affray, which involves using or threatening unlawful violence, and is scheduled to be sentenced on October 26.

During his interview with Lemon, Jones said he and Crockett were also at the concert to engage and mobilize voters ahead of the November midterm elections.

“We were brought in to help and talk to and mobilize voters who need to be engaged right now in this very important election that we have going on in November,” he said.

Brown rejected the recognition following Jones’ apology. In the comments of Jones’ written statement posted to social media, Brown wrote, “Keep that award,” referring to the Congressional Record recognition.

Brown also said he never asked to be honored and that Jones and others approached him with the recognition, according to TMZ. He criticized Jones’ apology, accusing him of “tap dancing” and saying he wanted to be left alone to focus on his fans.
